Improving Your Brain Function

Many people think that we, as humans, only use 10% of our brain on a daily basis. Everyone has his or her theory of what this actually means, but bottom line is, you want to make sure your brain is functioning the best way possible. After all, we could argue that it is the most important organ in your body.

With that said, are you feeding your brain what it really needs? Are you exercising your brain? There are many foods and exercises that can help you improve your brainpower. Below are some recommendations that can help you improve your brain function:

Fish

Fish is brain food that you may want to consider making a regular part of your diet. It has omega 3 fatty acids, which are a group of nutrients that are essential for the health of your brain. Studies have shown that people whose diets are filled with omega 3 fatty acids are less likely to have a stroke or a heart attack.

Nuts And Chocolate

Nuts are a great source of vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that can help improve the health of your brain. In fact, studies have shown that vitamin E can help protect against cognitive decline. Dark chocolate is filled with caffeine and other stimulants. This can help improve memory and focus.

You can eat up to one ounce of nuts and dark chocolate per day. This will allow you to reap all of the benefits of those foods without all of the extra calories and fat.

Avocados

Every organ in your body requires healthy blood circulation, and your brain is no exception. A diet that is rich in healthy foods, such as avocados, can help prevent plaque from building up in your arteries. This helps ensure healthy blood flow throughout your body and to your brain.

Blueberries

Blueberries can help protect against free radical damage. Free radicals can damage every part of your body, including your brain. Studies have also shown that blueberries may protect against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Skip the Calculator

Your body requires regular exercise in order to stay in optimal shape. The same applies to your brain. Brain exercises will help improve your memory as well as the overall health of your brain. With that said, toss the calculator aside and use your brain to solve math problems; that is a great way to exercise your brain.

Do not use a pencil, computer or paper to do math problems. If you want to make this exercise more challenging, then you can walk while you are trying to solve the equation.

Test Your Recall

You can also exercise your brain by testing your recall. For example, make a list of what you need to get at the grocery store. One hour later, you should see how many of those items you are able to recall.
